On Zohran Mamdani

On Zohran Mamdani, Candidate for Mayor of New York

by Douglas Groothuis, PhD

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people (Proverbs 13:34).

Zohran Mamdani cries "Islamophobia!" when he is criticized. Yes, Mr. Mamdani, I do fear what Islam will do to a culture, to a nation, to a people when it becomes ascendent. This concern is rational and based on Islamic history and doctrine. I have taught about and written about Islam for over thirty years.

It is not a religion of peace, but of jihad. It is not compatible with American ideals: freedom of religion, freedom of speech. It is misogynistic--endorsing polygamy, wife beating, and child brides (Mohammad is the example and model for that). It is antisemitic, which traces back to the Jews original rejection of Mohammad. It is expansionist on every level: religious, political, and cultural. Islam never fully assimilates to an alien culture. It infiltrates and then seeks to dominate through Sharia law. It has done this throughout history. Consider the recent fate of Lebanon. Consider the savage Muslim persecution of Christians in Nigeria. One could go on.

Our American freedom of religion allows Muslims to practice their religion here. However, if the practice of that religion--or any religion--collides with the Constitution, it must give way. Our freedoms and our national character are too precious to be undermined by Islamic theology and politics.
